When do classes begin?

I tentatively plan on starting classes this summer.  If you are not already on the mailing list, please join by clicking the link to the left.  You will be notified by Email when the date is final.  Why the uncertainty?  I had a beautiful baby boy March 17th and don’t want to miss a thing!  J   I’ll be sure we’re both ready when I start teaching again.

Where will classes be held?

At the Earth Movement home studio off I 68’s Sabraton exit (exit 4) on Summer School Rd (Morgantown, WV).  You will receive detailed directions to the studio with your paid registration.  I will send one Email to all paid registrants with directions and parking details.

How long are the classes?

Classes will be one hour long, once a week in 6 week sessions.

How much are the classes?

$60 for each 6 week session.  Classes must be used in the 6 weeks you originally registered for due to the way the class is structured and the limited space available.

What is the average age of people in your classes?

I have had people as young as 12 and people in their 70’s take my Belly Dance classes.  In any given class, there are a wide range of ages, back grounds, body types and interests.  (To answer some common questions related to this statement:  No, there are not only college students or only middle aged women in class- the population is diverse.)  Once in a while, a man will sign up for class, but typically, there are all females in class.

What class do I take after I complete the 6 week session?

Students repeat the basic 6 week session several times, so you will remain in the Basic technique class to master the material before moving on to a higher level class.  Because Belly Dance is so ancient, there are copious basic moves and concepts to learn.  You will not learn all you need to know in one 6 week session, just as it takes more than 6 weeks to master the basics of ballet or guitar.  No two 6 week sessions will cover the exact same material, so you will review key moves and concepts crucial for a strong foundation (and safety), but also learn new ones.   You will also have the opportunity to take workshops to add to your repertoire.   Purchasing and using Narah and Jala’s Technical foundation DVD (clicking here will take ypu to a picture of the cover!)will reinforce what you learn in class and help you learn more quickly.

What do I wear to class?

Dress for class is any dance or exercise wear that is not too baggy, so that I am able to see what you are doing and assess alignment and mechanics properly.

No jeans, khakis, cords, etc. or big tee shirts please

Many wear yoga pants and a tank top or sports bra. A triangular cotton or rayon scarf (or a square one that can be folded into a triangle) is helpful to tie around your hips for definition. While you are not required to show your belly, *remember that the more I can see, the more I can help you.  Please leave any noisy costume pieces, such as coin scarves or belts at home.  These are best left for home practice and performance.  Also, be aware that we start with a yoga warm up, and skirts may inhibit your movement.

How do I sign up?

Go to the class registration page, read and agree to the class policies; fill out the registration information; pay for the 6 week class session; come to classes when they begin.

You can also travel to Pittsburgh on Saturdays for lessons with Olivia Kissel of the Zafira Dance Company.  I highly recommend her and you will also meet Pittsburgh community belly dancers, whom the Morgantown community has a good connection with.  See the schedule on their website:  www.zafiradance.com
